Discharge in early pregnancy. Should I be worried?
During pregnancy, a woman gets to know a new life situation, and it is natural that pregnancy brings with it changes that a woman has never encountered before. Discharge at the beginning of pregnancy is usually considered one of the symptoms of early pregnancy. Of course, it is important to distinguish the color and intensity of vaginal discharge. Some women describe in discussions that they had no discharge at the beginning of pregnancy. Is discharge in early pregnancy a cause for concern?
Discharge as a symptom in pregnancy can have different origins. During the implantation of the embryo in the uterine lining, the blood vessels of the uterine wall are disturbed. Roughly 10 to 14 days after conception, pink or light brown vaginal discharge may appear. Brown discharge during pregnancy is not a cause for concern. It is about the so-called implantation discharge that lasts a short time. In principle, such a discharge clearly indicates the implantation of the egg in the uterus, which is crucial for maintaining the pregnancy. Mucous or watery, odorless discharge in the first and second trimester is completely normal, because it is the mucus that forms the mucus plug that prevents bacteria from entering the vagina. Deep pink discharge after the 4th week of pregnancy can also be a negative sign of a spontaneous abortion (the embryo was not retained) or it can be an ectopic pregnancy.
Brown discharge from the vagina at the beginning of pregnancy is completely normal. It is a mixture of blood and vaginal secretion. The bloody admixture gradually disappears and a white watery discharge remains. It acquires a milky white shade. Some women most often describe its watery to creamy consistency. During pregnancy, such discharge is completely natural and normal. However, attention should be paid to increased intensity or change in consistency. A white, lumpy discharge from the vagina can signal a yeast infection. Also be careful if a woman feels burning or itching. It can be a sign of ongoing inflammation of the urinary tract or bladder.
Gray discharge during pregnancy can be a symptom of bacterial vaginosis. It is also accompanied by itching and has an unpleasant fishy smell. A yellow or greenish vaginal discharge for a change may indicate the presence of chlamydia. The worst sign is red vaginal discharge during pregnancy. It can be accompanied by other symptoms, such as pain in the lower abdomen or cramps. Unfortunately, it is a discharge with an admixture of blood, which signals a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. In the first trimester, exceptionally red discharge can signal an infection.
