Have you ever wondered how a newborn baby sees immediately after birth? There are many known cases of mammals whose young are born biologically blind , e.g. puppies, kittens, etc. How about humans? Unlike hearing, which newborns are born with relatively well developed, vision has its limitations. A newborn's vision develops after birth, but it is nowhere near as sharp as many parents believe. So you might be surprised that when a baby is born, it doesn't see much . At the same time, however, it is not true that the baby is born blind. Of course, if it is not a congenital vision disorder.

A baby's vision begins to develop around the 2nd month of being in the womb, and it continues until the 30th week. A person perceives approximately 80 percent of the information around him with his eyes. The development of sight is very closely connected with the development of the brain. After birth, vision continues to develop, and until about the 12th month, the visual organs and vision are very susceptible to the occurrence of some vision disorders . During the first month after birth, newborns are myopic and focus only on an immediate distance of around 20 to 30 cm. There is talk of the so-called mother's distance - the child can see the mother's face while breastfeeding and a strong emotional bond is created. Eyesight is very sensitive to light, because there was not much of it in the abdomen. Also, the eye movement is still uncoordinated and the eyes can run to the sides (squinting), because the child cannot fix objects with his eyes.

It is interesting that until about the 2nd month , the child cannot distinguish colors, although he can see them with his eyes. At the age of 2-3 months, a newborn can focus at a greater distance , can already recognize faces and begins to coordinate eye movements. However, occasional squinting can occur up to the 6th month. Be careful, however, if the baby squints for a long time , in which case it is advisable to visit a doctor and undergo an eye examination with the baby. Between the 3rd and 6th months, the child begins to perceive the wider environment and develops peripheral vision , and the child also actively perceives color stimuli (around the 4th month, the perception of the color spectrum is fully developed). It is also interesting that around the 6th month, the iris should already have its final pigment color and it is thus possible to determine the color of the eyes . By approximately the 12th month, the child already has developed vision at the level of 80 percent. During this period, the cooperation of the brain and vision is fully manifested, motor skills and visual memory develop. A child's sight and visual perception are fully developed only around 5-6 years of age.
