The topic of abortion is very sensitive. Unfortunately, it concerns an increasing number of pregnancies. Spontaneous abortion represents approximately 20 to 25% of all pregnancies. Approximately 80% of miscarriages occur before the 12th week of pregnancy. A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before the end of the 20th week. The causes of spontaneous abortions are very different. Problems with maintaining pregnancy are much more frequent today than in the past. However, the abnormal development of the fetus (note the most common chromosomal abnormalities) is behind the abortion, which makes the pregnancy unsustainable and causes the woman's body to spontaneously abort.

However, the reason for the abortion can also be external factors. That is, something that a pregnant woman did or did not do - alcohol, smoking, inappropriate or insufficient nutrition, untreated infection, drug use, etc. The risk of miscarriage is also increased by other accompanying diagnoses or advanced age of the mother over 35 years.

Spontaneous abortion often occurs in the 5th to 6th week, when the pregnancy is not yet confirmed by ultrasound. So it is not in the clinical phase. Spontaneous abortion in this phase is also called biochemical pregnancy. Some research suggests that 50-75% of pregnancies that end before the 6th week can be considered biochemical. Many women do not even notice this type of miscarriage, because they do not even know that it was a pregnancy and the miscarriage manifests itself as a slightly heavier period.

Spontaneous abortion is accompanied by symptoms that are very similar to heavy menstruation. However, the symptoms of miscarriage last longer. The most common symptoms of miscarriage include vaginal bleeding, longer-lasting and intense spotting, strong cramps (stronger than with classic menstrual bleeding), increasing back pain. Bleeding after abortion lasts on average 10 to 21 days. In some cases, bleeding or spotting after an abortion can last up to 6 weeks. The length of bleeding after abortion is very individual and also depends on the type of abortion (complete, incomplete, missed, septic). Intense bleeding should not exceed 7 to 10 days. Subsequently, the discharge should be weaker. If you want to try for another pregnancy after an abortion, it is ideal to wait at least three months based on the recommendations of doctors. On the contrary, some doctors recommend trying as soon as possible if the state of health allows it.
