The frequency of stool in newborns, as well as its color, smell and consistency, are influenced by several factors. One of them is whether the baby is on artificial food or breastfed classically with breast milk. In infants, the stool may have different characteristics.

For babies who are fed artificial milk, it is expected that they should have a stool every day (even several times a day), at least once every two to three days. The frequency can also be different based on how much food the baby receives and how much its body consumes. The stool when feeding with artificial milk is brown, brownish-yellow in color, and after consumption of some types of artificial milk, it is also green in color. Digestive problems, or deviations in the stool can also be caused by the transition from breast milk to artificial milk. Not every artificial formula has to suit the baby during the transition. If the stool is watery, it is a clear sign that artificial milk does not suit the baby. So try changing the brand. Some formula-fed babies are more likely to become constipated or have watery stools. Consult your pediatrician directly about such problems.

Breastfed babies have a stool at the beginning of breastfeeding, often almost after every feeding, while after 3 to 6 weeks, bigger breaks can appear. It is normal if a child does not poop for 4 days or a week. From the 6th month to the 1st year, their stool should stabilize roughly at a frequency of twice a day or once every two days. The color of stool in a breastfed child is typically yellow to mustard yellow.
