None of the abortion methods are desirable, and under no circumstances should you attempt any abortion methods in the form of drug overdose, alcohol consumption, or physical harm. If a woman decides to have an abortion and has tried all other options and solutions that could prevent the abortion, there are several ways to proceed with a legal abortion. Even before that, however, a woman can contact rescue centers and seek free psychological help. In extreme cases, it is possible to give birth anonymously and put the child up for adoption.

In Slovakia, it is possible to terminate a pregnancy with the help of a surgical procedure. This procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia (with general anesthesia, preoperative examinations are required). Surgical abortion takes approximately 3 to 5 hours, including recovery after the procedure. Such artificial termination of pregnancy can be performed up to the 12th week of pregnancy. The main reason for an abortion should be a threat to the life of the mother or the development of the fetus. Artificial termination of pregnancy (surgical abortion) is also used in cases where the woman has not reached the age of 16. Only these two reasons for abortion are recognized by Slovak legislation, while performing an abortion for other reasons is considered a criminal offense. An early abortion can be performed up to the 6th to 8th week of pregnancy or a classic abortion up to the mentioned 12th week of pregnancy or the 24th week for proof of a genetic developmental disorder.

In general, surgical abortion is also approached for other personal, social or economic reasons (young age, unsuitable conditions, disagreement between partners, psychological problems, physical disability, traumatic conception - rape). Access to abortion is a woman's human right, and any restriction of access to artificial termination of pregnancy is reprehensible.

The abortion pill is not legal in Slovakia and does not constitute a legislative option to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Slovak legislation does not yet allow chemical abortion. Within the European Union, however, 22 countries have already legalized the administration of the abortion pill, including neighboring Austria and the Czech Republic. The abortion pill as a medical form of abortion can be taken up to the 49th to 63rd day of pregnancy when deciding to terminate a pregnancy, while the patient must be thoroughly familiar with the course and subsequent symptoms of termination of pregnancy.
