How to tell the position of baby in womb?
The position of the fetus in the uterus is very important in certain stages of pregnancy. That is also why some mothers are interested in how to find out the position of the baby in the belly. Even a first-time mother knows that the ideal scenario is when a baby comes into the world with its head forward. However, this is definitely not a position in which the baby would last from the very beginning of pregnancy to the final stage.
At least until the 6th month, the baby in the womb changes its position several times. If this happens, the pregnant woman will definitely feel the baby's movements. When the fetus is smaller and the uterus filled with amniotic fluid offers the baby enough space, it can change its position several times a day without much difficulty. At this stage, the various irregular positions of the baby do not pose a risk. However, in the third trimester, the fetus grows and changing positions is no longer so easy for the baby. Around the 36th week, the baby should turn over in the tummy to a position with the head down, or into the birth position. Some women report that their baby was already in the birthing position at the beginning of the second trimester.
There may also be a situation where the baby is in the so-called irregular position, which means that the position is not ideal from the point of view of childbirth. The primary problem is that the header does not point in the right direction, e.g. transverse position, oblique position or position in which the baby's pelvis is directed towards the birth canal.
In the third trimester, it is important that the position of the baby is stabilized. It is possible to determine the position of the baby in the abdomen with the help of an ultrasound or sonographic examination or by touch (note Leopold's touch). The gynecologist monitors the baby's position, while he can gently direct the baby's position by touch and, if necessary, change its position to the desired one. Such a change of position is performed by slight pressure on certain parts of the abdomen, but it is not possible in all cases. If the position of the baby is irregular before delivery, the obstetrician must decide on a cesarean delivery. A woman herself cannot determine with certainty the position of the baby in her abdomen. Although it is possible to feel parts of the baby's body.
The ideal position of the fetus in the uterus before birth is a longitudinal position with the head down. It is then possible to distinguish whether it is a front or rear position. The longitudinal position with the head in front is when the head is pointing down, but the face is directed towards the mother's back. The supine position means that the face is turned towards the abdomen. With regard to the shape of the birth canal, the ideal position is front, because due to the curvature of the pelvis, this position is the most natural. However, there is no reason to perform a caesarean section even with a posterior position. Labor may take longer, or contractions may be more intense.
If the baby is in the pelvic end position, it means that the head is pointing up and the bottom is down. For childbirth, this means that the child is in a completely irregular position. Even this does not necessarily indicate the necessity of a cesarean delivery. Here it is up to the obstetrician to determine the position of the baby's legs and whether there is a risk of umbilical cord delivery or other risks.
Sometimes it is necessary to proceed to the caesarean section in the transverse position. Especially if the child is in this position even before the contractions, a caesarean section is often necessary. In the transverse position, there is a higher risk of strangulation of the umbilical cord, which is dangerous for the baby during childbirth.
