X-ray examination during pregnancy is today considered inappropriate by many mothers, because it is said that it can seriously damage the development of the fetus. Many women are interested in the issue of X-ray examinations and pregnancy when they are pregnant. Opinions are often contradictory in discussions, but most women have information that X -rays during pregnancy are safe for the child. What is the reality? Is X-ray during pregnancy dangerous for the child?

An X-ray machine is a device used to create X-ray images of the body. These images are used to diagnose and evaluate various diseases and medical conditions. X-rays are electromagnetic radiation that have a shorter wavelength and higher energy than visible light. X-rays are created in a high-voltage generator. In this generator, an electric current is sent through a vacuum electron tube. The tube has a metal vascular cathode and anode. When the current passes through the cathode, electrons are created, which are then accelerated to the anode. This rapid acceleration of electrons creates X-rays.

X-ray diagnostics takes place in such a way that the patient is placed between the X-ray tube and a detection device, for example film or a digital sensor. X- rays pass through the patient's body and are captured by the detection device. X-rays pass through the body and the tissues absorb the X-rays in different ways. Tissues with high density, such as bone, absorb more radiation and leave a white image on the image. Soft tissues that absorb less radiation leave darker areas on the image.

X-ray examination during pregnancy is completely safe for the woman and the fetus. A woman undergoes this examination only if it is recommended by a doctor. The risk of damage to the fetus by X-ray radiation is minimal due to the minimal dose of radiation that the body receives during the examination. The limit is set at 100 mSv per year, while a person receives a radiation dose of 0.1-1.5 mSv during one X-ray scan. A person receives more radiation even during a 5-hour plane flight. Today, several doctors and experts agree that the statement that points to damage to the fetus during an X-ray examination is an afterthought. A pregnant woman undergoes an X-ray examination only if it is necessary. The riskiness of the examination is assessed by a gynecologist who identifies the stage of pregnancy and possible health complications.
