Is sushi safe during pregnancy?
A woman should avoid sushi, seafood and raw meat of any origin during pregnancy. The reason is the risk of infection with bacteria or parasites, which can cause stomach problems for the woman, but can also endanger the fetus itself. Despite the fact that many women argue for an easily digestible fish diet, raw fish pose a risk during pregnancy.
Seafood or oysters are also unsuitable. The pregnancy diet should be balanced and nutritious, but some ingredients and foods should be avoided during pregnancy. Digestive problems in pregnancy can cause vomiting, diarrhea or dehydration. These consequences create a risk of damage to the fetus. Marine fish are also a known source of mercury and their consumption should be in moderation. If you already have a taste for fish, you should not exceed the dose of 2 to 3 portions per week. In addition to sea fish, you can reach for freshwater fish, which are also a great source of healthy fats. In all circumstances, heat treatment is necessary. It is recommended to avoid canned fish or fish preparations.
An alternative to classic sushi is vegetable sushi, which does not contain raw fish, but only seaweed, cooked rice and any kind of vegetables. Vegetables should also be heat-treated. Some women recommend replacing the vegetables with avocado, or combining the ingredients. This form of sushi is suitable because it does not contain any raw meat components, it is easy to digest and at the same time full of vitamins.
