If everything goes as it should, the amniotic fluid is an environment for the 9-month-old baby in which it can move safely. However, amniotic fluid is by no means just ordinary. It protects the baby from impacts, and at the same time ensures the thermoregulation of the fetus. Sufficient amniotic fluid is crucial for fetal development. Thanks to its presence, the baby's muscles and lung sacs develop. It is interesting that the child excretes urine into the amniotic fluid from the 12th week and begins to swallow it from about the 3rd month.

There are approximately 800 to 1,000 ml of amniotic fluid in the mother's abdomen. However, the amount varies depending on the stage of pregnancy. During pregnancy, amniotic fluid is constantly produced. Amniotic fluid is a clear and colorless liquid that does not have a distinct smell. Amniotic fluid contains up to 99% water, but it also contains glucose (slightly sweet smell and taste), proteins, minerals, creatine, particles of peeled skin, small hairs and urea, which gets into it when the baby urinates.

Before giving birth, the water level drops and becomes slightly cloudy. Amniotic fluid can flow out suddenly in a stream, but it can also leak in small amounts. It is important to pay attention to this signal so that the amniotic fluid level does not become too low during slow drainage.
