When does labor need to be induced?
It is interesting that, in practice, only 4% of women give birth on the exact due date. The length of pregnancy is calculated from the first day of the last menstruation. A standard pregnancy lasts 280 days, which is 40 weeks. The due date can also be specified by ultrasound examination and CRL parameters, which are used to determine the maturity of the fetus. A normal physiological birth is considered the one in the 38th to 42nd week.
A pregnancy that lasts longer than 42 weeks is referred to as a post-term pregnancy - carrying. In such a case, the pregnant woman is usually hospitalized around the 41st week and is monitored in the obstetrics department. This is where labor is pre-induced - the effort is to prepare the mother's organism for a natural vaginal birth. Therefore, it is primarily important that the woman gives birth naturally without the use of artificial induction of labor. In the period of 7, 10 to 14 days (depending on the maternity workplace) from the expected date of birth, induction takes place. It is important to take into account the fact that every pregnancy is different and in some cases labor may be induced earlier for adequate reasons.
Termination of pregnancy after the due date must be ordered by a doctor. In the event that the body does not respond to pre-induction methods of pregnancy termination (e.g. Hamilton's touch), the woman must be familiarized with the medical-pharmaceutical method of inducing pregnancy. Also according to the World Health Organization, it is necessary to proceed with induction only if the benefits outweigh the risks of pregnancy. Even carrying during pregnancy brings with it risks, so it is up to the doctor to consider inducing labor.
Women state the different range when, in their case, labor was induced after the due date. Some women talk about 4 to 5 days from the expected date. Other women have experience of inducing labor 10 days to 2 weeks after the due date. Several women have come across the information that doctors approach the induction of labor approximately 10 days after the due date. However, this procedure is usually individual, depending on the nature of the pregnancy.
