Many moms get scared during pregnancy if their belly starts to harden out of nowhere. The fact is that everything has its causes and a hard belly during pregnancy is very natural, and it does not have to be a symptom of any complications. However, it is important to know the reasons and possible causes why this phenomenon occurs. Primarily, the feeling of hardening of the abdomen is associated with a certain discomfort and a strange feeling in the lower abdomen. This discomfort is very often related to the phase of the pregnancy cycle the woman is in.

In the first trimester, the hardening of the abdomen is most often caused by the enlargement of the uterus and the lengthening of its muscles. These are often expressions that can frighten women. The consequence of this is a hard abdomen or occasional pain on the sides of the abdomen. Very often, the hardening of the abdomen in this phase is caused by the accumulation of gases and changes in the digestive process. Hardening of the abdomen during pregnancy is also often caused by overload and increased physical exertion. As a rule, it is caused by lifting heavier loads, excessive exercise or more intense sexual activity.

Abdominal hardening and possible other symptoms must be monitored mainly in the first and second trimesters, because in this phase this phenomenon can also be a symptom of miscarriage. Statistically, the largest number of spontaneous abortions occurs up to 12 weeks. A large proportion of abortions occur before the 24th week of pregnancy. However, keep checking the mentioned symptoms in the next stages of pregnancy. A hard abdomen, abdominal pain , cramps , back pain and light red to brown vaginal discharge can be a clear sign of miscarriage.

Hardening of the abdomen appears more intensively even in the third trimester of pregnancy. This period is characterized by contractions of the uterus. It is about the so-called messengers - Braxton-Hicks contractions, which cause hardening of the abdomen and slight pain in the lower abdomen. They do not have regularity, the interval between contractions does not shorten, and the pain is not as strong as with true contractions. Some mothers can easily mistake them for real labor contractions. However, the situation should never be underestimated, even if it is the 34th-36th week of pregnancy, when premature birth could occur. In any case, you can inform your attending gynecologist about the sensations related to the hardening of the abdomen, while carefully monitoring other symptoms - frequency, intensity, pain and others.

Expectant mothers and mothers-to-be discuss the dangerous hardening of the abdomen. Several women experienced a hardening of the abdomen during pregnancy precisely because of increased physical exertion, e.g. while cleaning. They generally consider the hardening of the abdomen to be a natural part of pregnancy. It also depends on what stage of pregnancy the hardening of the abdomen occurs, whether the cervix does not open, or whether it is true contractions. They also solve how to get relief from the hardening of the abdomen. A hot bath, rest mode and sufficient fluid intake can help.
